Here is a different way of viewing possibilities. The development of the software program is described in the Texas Holdem blog entry.

Pre-Flop: In this example, my possible hands on the flop, with hole cards four of hearts and queen of clubs included, are shown. Although it is interesting to see what hands may result on the flop, it does not provide guidance as to whether the hole cards should be played. For guidance, it is appropriate to use the Winning Percentages output which shows the percentage of hands winnable at each stage for the given hole cards.

Flop: After the flop is dealt, my hand is three of a kind and my best possible hand on the turn is a four of a kind while my opponents can have full house as the best possible hand. This is indicating that I have a chance of winning at the turn. Therefore, it is worthwhile to proceed, depending on the bet amount. The various strategies for betting after the flop are described in the pages of many books written by the professionals.

Turn: On the turn, my hand is still three of a kind with the best possible hand at the river being a four of a kind. In contrast, my opponents continue to have full house as the best possible hand. The same point applies: gambling and continuing on plus strategies for betting after the turn are described in many books written by the professionals.

River: On the river, I have three of a kind while the opponents can have better. At this point, it is makes sense to proceed with play since my hand is moderately strong. A lot depends on my reading of my opponents prior to this point. Did they show strength or weakness? Were they gambling and do not have good hands? Were they bluffing? I think these dynamic aspects of the game are more important than the static mathematical tables for odds and probabilities.

Showdown: As it turns out, my three of a kind with a jack kicker is beaten by a three of a kind with an ace kicker. That is Texas Holdem! See end of hand.
